In Memoriam Bert de Boer

With much grief we have to announce the passing away, after a brief illness, of our dear and highly respected colleague and friend

Bert de Boer
Prof. Dr. Bert de Boer

who died on 27 January 2009, only 35 years old.

Bert de Boer received his MSc (1996) and PhD (2001) from the University of Groningen. After a stay at Bell Laboratories, he joined the University of Groningen as an assistant professor in 2003, working on molecular electronics. In April 2008, he was promoted to the tenured position of associate professor of molecular electronics.

Bert received a number of prestigious prizes and awards, including a Talent Fellowship and a VIDI-grant.

Bert was a highly motivated and productive researcher, who set very high standards for himself and his students. He was also an excellent teacher and an exemplary supervisor of PhD students.

He was the centre of our daily lives and made a magnificent connection between us chemists and physicists.

We will miss him dearly.

Dr. Hylke Akkerman receives Else Kooi Prize
Friday, 28 November 2008
Dr. Hylke Akkerman received the Else Kooi Prize during the SAFE/ProRISC conference in Veldhoven, The Netherlands on Friday November 28, 2008 for his research on “Large-area Molecular Junctions”. After the award ceremony, Dr. Akkerman orally presented his research, which was published in highly ranked journals like Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, PNAS, Adv. Mater., Small, J. Phys. Conden. Matter, etc.. The Else Kooi Prize is awarded annually to an outstanding young researcher in the field of applied semiconductor research and IC-design.

The Else Kooi Prize (www.ekp.nl ) is named after Dr. Else Kooi, student chemistry at the University of Groningen, inventor of LOCOS (LOCal Oxidation of Silicon), adjunct-director of Philips Research Labs (Nat.Lab, Eindhoven) from 1975-1979 and founder of Philips Research Laboratories Sunnyvale in Silicon Valley.

Hylke Akkerman receives Gold Medal in MRS Graduate Student Award.
Thursday, 29 November 2007
During a special award ceremony on November 28, Hylke B. Akkerman, received the Gold Award of the Materials Research Society after presenting his work in front of the Graduate Student Award Committee in a special session for the nominees. Selected out of many, the 24 finalists presented their own work in an all-decisive presentation session. From the 24 finalist only 6 were awarded with the Gold medal, whereas the other awardees received a silver medal. The jury was “very impressed” by the work that Hylke Akkerman presented. Hylke’s research subject deals with the fabrication of reliable molecular junctions based on self-assembled monolayers and the investigation of the tunnel transport through such monolayers.
